A few weeks ago, we were out and about looking for items to spruce up our front yard. We decided to try out a breakfast spot that had fairly decent reviews, Patty’s Place in Norton, MA. The first thing I noticed is that no one will take your name when you walk in the door. It seemed you just waited in line and everything was first come, first serve. Not a bad policy as it seems to take the stress away from waiting. We had heard that the lines can be fairly substantial at times, but we’re always patient for a good breakfast. Fortunately, we timed it right and didn’t have to wait very long we were seated by a nice gentleman wearing a tuxedo t-shirt.
The diner has a nice mix of booths and tables. There is a counter, but it is not really in an ideal location. It’s right next to the front door and you’re guaranteed to have people standing right behind you while they wait in line. Would have made me feel a bit claustrophobic once it got busier.
Kelli ordered eggs over medium, bacon, toast, and hashbrowns. As always, she was very excited to see hashbrowns on the menu. While it’s preferred to have fresh made hashbrowns, it seems that most diners in the area serve frozen hashbrowns similar to what you’d order at McDonalds. They were greasy goodness, but lose a little points for being pre-made. The eggs were cooked well, but were a little on the thin side. The bacon was thick and had a bit more flavor than most other places around. Kelli was a big fan of the iced tea and was thankful for a refill.
I ordered a veggie omelet, homefries with onions, and toast. There is an omelet in the picture above, I promise. It’s just hidden by the large helping of onions. Typically, I’d expect the homefries to be cooked with the onions, but it seemed that they were cooked separately and added together after the fact. I’d also expect that the onions would be a bit more cooked. At first, I was worried that I’d made a mistake about adding the onions, but I was pleased when I took my first bite. The onions provided a bit of a sweetness to the homefries and I really didn’t need to add salt, ketchup, hot sauce, or anything else to the homefries. It was a bit different, but good. The omelet was nice and cheesy. I also felt the eggs were on the thinner side. It was good, but just didn’t have the fluffy texture that you normally expect in an omelet. It wasn’t as thin as the omelet at the Catman Cafe, but definitely in the ballpark. The only other thing to note was that the toast seemed fairly small. The mini-toast was fine, but I’d really prefer a normal sized piece of bread doused in butter. All to often in these adventures, the butter is under used. What gives? Just add an extra pad of butter please. A coffee refill and a nicely buttered piece of toast topped with some jelly is just a great way to end breakfast
All in all, we were happy with our experience at Patty’s. The menu had some different items that we’ll try on our next visit. The service was decent and we really didn’t have any complaints. There’s nothing about Patty’s that really stands out, but it was a solid breakfast spot that I would be happy with if it was in walking distance to our house. It really felt like a family run joint that would take care of its regulars without being rude to new customers. Patty’s stacks up well with the other diners in the area. It’s not at the very top, but it’s better than the middle of the pack fare.
