Murph’s Place (Cash Only)

As of late, our breakfast adventure has seem to hit a snag. After a several lackluster attempts at finding something new, it became far to easy to just stick with the same ol’ same ol’ places. Well, we ended up finding a place that finally exceeded our meager expectations. Kelli needed to take her car to the shop as her trunk and gas cap were no longer functioning. Thankfully, this gave us the opportunity to check out Murph’s Place in Norwood and it did not disappoint.

The first thing to note, if you didn’t catch on in the title, is that Murph’s is cash only. We rarely have cash on us, so this meant a trip to the ATM. Since our favorite breakfast spot in CA was cash only, this didn’t deter us. We just wish we had known ahead of time. We arrived around 1pm on a Saturday and seats were aplenty. There was a counter with about 10 seats and bunch of tables, but not booths. The atmosphere was plain to drab. The menu was standard breakfast with nothing out of the ordinary. toast, bow down to your omelet overlordI ordered the Spanish omelet, homefries, and toast. Lately, the omelets I’ve had have been either terrible or, at best, mediocre. Nothing had come around that matched the Spanish omelet that I would consistently get at Wendy’s Place in El Segundo. I wouldn’t say Murph’s Spanish omelet was as good as Wendy’s, but it is no slouch. It’s definitely the best omelet I’ve had since moving back to MA. The eggs were nice and fluffy. The salsa tasted fresh. The peppers and onions were cooked well. There was great cheese distribution. This omelet made me happy and helped me to forget about the impending car repair bill. The homefries were cooked perfectly and had enough seasoning that I didn’t need to add any condiments. The toast was nice and buttery, something that seems to be ignored at most of the diners in the area. The only downside was the coffee. It tasted like it was cut with water. Oh well. Kelli ordered a BLT and fries. On Kelli’s scale of bad to fine to good, she rated the BLT as good. More often than not, she rates her meals as “fine” so it must have been better than normal. The fries were too crispy for her liking. The was good news for me as I was able to eat half of her fries without her complaining. I’m not sure what her issue was with the fries, aside from the crispiness, because I thought they were really good. Her iced tea was “meh” but it came in a nice red plastic cup, just like at Wendy’s Place.

As we have been trying to find a replacement for Wendy’s Place, we were able to reminisce a bit while at Murph’s Place because it shared a few unique qualities with Wendy’s. While there were no hashbrowns, but the red cups, Spanish omelet, and “cash only” restriction helped put a smile on our faces. All in all, this was the best breakfast experience I’ve had since moving back to MA, excluding a certain spot on the Cape of course. I’m not sure this is a place we’d go to every weekend as it is a little out of the way for us. However, if the owner decided to make a Murph’s 2 closer to our fair city, the contest would be over. The omelet was fantastic, the potatoes were great, and I can overlook a bad cup of coffee. In all honesty, it was a better cup of coffee than the one I had on Sunday, just a little too bland for my liking. When we’re in the area again, we’ll definitely be swinging by.
